Allevia Hospital Epsom - the Gilgit Wing

The Allevia Hospital in Epsom required a new wing to meet the increasing need of the community. The new Gilgit Wing extends and connects existing buildings on the hospital campus. The 6,435m2 four-level wing houses 10 state-of-the-art operating theatres, with 28 beds.

Project requirements

Delivering the Gilgit Wing required construction within a live hospital environment, where maintaining uninterrupted operations was critical. The constrained footprint and integration with existing infrastructure demanded precise coordination across all trades with no disruption.

At the core of the project was the need to protect highly sensitive hospital-grade mechanical, electrical, and medical gas systems with significant emphasis on waterproofing performance.

Allco provided robust, high-performance waterproofing solutions designed to safeguard critical building services from moisture ingress. Our systems ensured long-term durability, reliability, and protection in an environment where failure is not an option, supporting operational continuity during construction and the facility's resilience.

Allco Solution

To meet the project’s performance and design demands, Allco provided a complete waterproofing solution using the full Volclay range, including:

Voltex: 4,200m² of Volclay Voltex was utilised to waterproof the building, lift pits, ground beams, under slab, penetrations, beam extensions and shotcrete walls.

Swelltite: The in-situ walls were waterproofed with our Swelltite membrane, with special detail applied to all joins.

The key advantage of using the full Volclay system to encapsulate the building is that Voltex and Swelltite membranes are specifically designed to work together. Combined with a range of compatible accessories, including Waterstop RX and Bentoseal, the system ensures reliable, continuous waterproofing and smooth transitions across potentially vulnerable junctions.

Execution and outcomes:

Collaboration between Allco, main contractor Leighs Construction, architects Klein, and applicator Sansom began early, with multiple pre-installation meetings focused on detailing and coordination. Throughout construction, Allco’s Technical Advisors provided ongoing guidance, conducted site inspections, and supported the installation process to help ensure a fully watertight result.
