Advanced BPA Waterproofing Technology

Volclay Ultraseal® is a technological advancement in below-grade waterproofing that combines natural sodium bentonite and a chemically resistant hydrophilic polymer to form a bentonite-polymer alloy (BPA). Ultraseal provides exceptional performance unmatched by other commercially available waterproofing systems. The key to Ultraseal’s exceptional performance is the unique bentonite-polymer interaction formed through a proprietary blending process. This process produces a homogeneous alloy with improved contaminant resistance, enhanced swelling properties, and a baseline permeability one magnitude better than natural sodium bentonite. Not only does Ultraseal have a lower permeability, it weighs 50% less than traditional bentonite products, making it easier to handle and install. The active, swelling properties of the bentonite-polymer alloy seals small concrete cracks and works under continuous and intermittent hydrostatic conditions.

Volclay Ultraseal consists of the sodium bentonite polymer alloy integrated within the fibers of a thick, non-woven geotextile carrier, known as the “core”. Geomembranes and geotextiles are added to the BPA “core” to produce two waterproofing membrane composites, Ultraseal SP and Ultraseal BT.

Ultraseal SP is a composite membrane with the BPA core encapsulated between a geotextile and a polyethylene geomembrane line that is ideal for underslab and property line wall applications, such as soldier pile and wood lagging retaining walls.

Ultraseal BT is a composite membrane consisting of the BPA core laminated to a polyethylene geomembrane liner that is ideal for backfilled foundation walls, cut and cover tunnels, and masonry block walls.

The two different Volclay Ultraseal membranes allow for the best performance features of each composite to be matched with specific application needs to provide unparalleled waterproofing protection.

Ultraseal BT is designed for applications where the concrete has already been placed. Typical applications for Ultraseal BT include backfilled foundation walls, tunnels, earth covered structures, and masonry block foundation walls.

Ultraseal SP is designed for applications where concrete is poured directly against the membrane. Typical applications for Ultraseal SP include under slabs and property line construction such as soldier pile and lagging, metal sheet piling, shotcrete and stabilized earth shoring walls.

EXCELLENT HYDROSTATIC RESISTANCE - Ultraseal has been successfully tested to resist 100 m of hydrostatic pressure.

EXTREMELY LOW PERMEABILITY - The baseline permeability of Ultraseal is at least 10 times better than traditional bentonite waterproofing membranes.

CONTINUOUS BOND STRENGTH TO CONCRETE - Ultraseal SP creates a mechanical bond where concrete is poured against the membrane.

SELF-SEALING MEMBRANE LAPS - Watertight laps are formed upon activation of the BPA core to provide reliable field performance.

HIGH CHEMICAL RESISTANCE - Ultraseal resists higher concentrations of salts and organic solvents than traditional hydrophilic waterproofing systems.
